Men’s Soccer Closes Out Regular Season With 2-1 Win At La Salle

Alec Hughes and Nathaniel Cardoza both scored within minutes of each other in the second half of the win.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Alec Hughes and Nathaniel Cardoza scored goals within minutes of each other in the second half as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 road win over La Salle at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday evening. The win moved the Minutemen to 7-1-2 on the year with a 3-1-2 record in Atlantic 10 play.
UMass picked up both of its goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, beginning with a Hughes goal in the 57th-minute. Hughes played his first touch at the near post off of Ben Shepherd's corner kick towards the near side of goal where it snuck through for his A-10 leading seventh goal of the season. Shepherd's assist gave him his seventh on the year, which also leads the conference.
Nathaniel Cardoza followed moments later with his first goal of the season, taking a pass from Yosuke Hanya before rocketing a shot from nearly 30-yards out that hit the bottom of the post and went into the back of net to put UMass ahead 2-0.
La Salle closed the gap to one goal in the 63rd-minute with an Omari Cotterell goal off a Luis Puchol assist.
Marvyn Dorchin finished with four saves in goal for the Minutemen as La Salle out-shot UMass 17-to-12 on the night. The Minutewomen had the advantage in shots on target however as they put seven of their 12 shots on target. Hughes finished with a team-leading two shots with two on goal while six Minutemen ended up putting shots on frame.
