McTear’s Five-Point Day Powers Minutewomen Over La Salle
April 10, 2021 | Field Hockey
Massachusetts tops La Salle in dominant 4-1 Senior Day victory
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey answered an early La Salle goal with four unanswered tallies as the Minutewomen picked up a 4-1 win on Saturday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
Massachusetts controlled play throughout the match and spent a majority of the game in the attacking third. Georgie McTear led the offense with two-goals plus an assist, and as a team the Minutewomen drew 10 attacking penalty corners to just one for La Salle.
The Explorers tallied the game's opening goal in the 12th minute. Natalie Biliunas dribbled through the circle and lifted an initial shot, put home on a nice tip by Samie Hackman.
McTear came up with the equalizer in the 22nd minute on a direct corner. Amelie Green fed the insert that was trapped by Steph Gottwals and left for a laser by McTear.
She followed up with the eventual game-winning tally in the 36th minute. Jess Beech fed McTear on a beautiful through ball in the midfield before McTear dribbled confidently into the circle, spinning around multiple La Salle defenders and tucking a low ball into the right corner.
Two more quick tallies in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach. Katherine Furry cleaned up an Emily Crawford rebound in the 46th minute. Then, in the 50th minute Crawford came through with a beautiful reverse-stick shot that went top left in the cage. Both Crawford and Furry's respective goals were their first of the season and McTear earned an assist on Crawford's tally.
In goal, Brooke Richards needed one save to preserve the victory and Ryan Curley recorded 11 stops for the Explorers.
Prior to Saturday's game, UMass recognized its six-member Class of 2021, which includes Lucy Cooper, Megan Davies, Emma Ewas, Jenna Garber, Bailey McNamara and McTear.
The Minutewomen play next on Sat., April 17 in a 1 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's.
