Baseball falls to the Hawks 10-2 in game one, 6-1 in game two
MERION STATION, Pa. - University of Massachusetts baseball fell at Saint Joseph's during a Saturday doubleheader 10-2 in game one and 6-1 in the second game. The losses dropped Massachusetts to 7-17 overall and 0-4 in the Atlantic 10 while Saint Joseph's improved to 9-6 on the year and remained undefeated at 4-0 in the A-10.
Game One
Saint Joseph's 10, Massachusetts 2
Home runs paved the way for the Hawks' first win of the day as Saint Joseph's on two long balls during the second and one more each in the third and fourth for an 8-0 lead. Nate Thomas sent a three-run dinger over the right field fence in the third before Andrew Cossetti and Brendan Hueth sent solo shots out of the park in the fourth and fifth, respectively.
Sophomore right fielder Michael Rounds got the Minutemen on the board with a two-run single in the seventh. Rounds connected on a 2-1 pitch and sent it through the right side as Josh Petrucci and Kevin Gower raced home.
Zack Given took the loss with four runs allowed in 2.0 innings of work. He struck out four with three hits allowed and two walks.
Game Two
Saint Joseph's 6, Massachusetts 1
The Hawks took command of game two with five runs in the second inning. A double by Hueth made it 2-0 before Jake Artz singled home one and Nate Thomas doubled in a pair for the 5-0 lead.
Massachusetts plated its run during the fifth inning. Chris Pearsons took first on a hit by pitch, moved to third thanks to a Jacob Sloss double and scored on Jake Given's ensuing fly ball to right field.
Tyler Dalton allowed five runs over three innings in the loss. He gave up eight hits and struck out one without a walk.
