Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short at Central Connecticut

Minutemen come up short on road 8-6 Tuesday afternoon
Mike Gervasi had his first career three-hit game in the loss, including a two-run double. Aidan Wilde also had a double as part of a two-hit afternoon, while Chris Pearsons had a pair of RBI.
Massachusetts erased at an early 2-0 deficit with Gervasi's two-bagger in the fourth inning. Dylan Judd began the frame with a base hit, then after Wilde hit a double to move Judd to third, Gervasi stepped to the plate with one out and sent a pitch to deep left field to plate both runs. But Central Connecticut would use a five-run bottom half of the frame to grab a 7-2 lead.
In the sixth, the Minutemen came back within three, using a bases loaded walk by Collin Shapiro coupled with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eddy Hart. The sac fly brought home Steve Luttazi, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning then moved into scoring position on a Kevin Skagerlind single and Shapiro's walk.
UMass battled in the ninth down to its final out and used a wild pitch to put pinch runner Erik Foster and Kevin Gower into scoring position. Pearsons then popped a single up the middle to score both Foster and Gower and bring the tying run to the plate, but the Minutemen would get no closer.
For CCSU, Jake Neuman picked up the win and Dylan Sabia earned a two-inning save. Kevin Dow was hooked with the loss for the Minutemen.
The Minutemen now focus on a three-game series at Merrimack, beginning Fri., March 12 at 3 p.m.
