Massachusetts sweeps weekend and wins home opener
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts freshman Josephine Ang broke a 1-1 tie in the 10th minute and the Minutewomen never looked back as the squad knocked off Vermont, 3-1, on Sunday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
Goalkeeper Brooke Richards made one save in the win and Vermont's Sierra Espeland turned aside five Minutewomen attempts.
UVM grabbed the early lead in the fifth minute on a penalty corner conversion. After inserting to the top of the circle, Kate Hall came to the left post and deflected a Catamounts shot into the cage.
But the UMass deficit was short-lived and Bella Ianni tallied the equalizer in the ninth minute. Coming up with a turnover in the attacking third, the ball came to Ianni who slipped it past a charging Espeland at the top of the circle. It was Ianni's first goal of the season.
Ang then quickly put the home side ahead in the 10th minute, ultimately her first career game-winning goal. Amelie Green inserted a penalty corner and after the Minutewomen cycled the ball, Green's shot was blocked in front. Ang was camped around the penalty spot to clean up the loose change.
Jess Beech then added an insurance tally early in the second quarter, on a feed from Georgie McTear. McTear fed Beech a pass just outside the circle and after Beech took three steps toward goal, Beech ripped a shot into the low-right corner of the cage.
UMass had an 12-4 advantage in shots, and a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Minutewomen continue a stretch of America East foes when the squad hosts Maine on Fri., March 12 at 1 p.m. from the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. In accordance with UMass' COVID-19 protocols, the game will be closed to spectators.
