Rossbach’s Late Goal Sends UMass To Victory

Field hockey downs Maine, 2-1; Minutewomen improve to 3-1 overall

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore center back Josie Rossbach scored on a penalty corner deflect with 78 seconds to play as the University of Massachusetts field hockey program defeated visiting-Maine, 2-1, at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Friday. The Minutewomen – winners of the last three – improved to 3-1 on the season while Maine dropped to 0-2 overall.

Rossbach's late tally came on the team's seven penalty corner of the day. The ball found its way to Emilie Keij on the left side of the circle following an insert by Amelie Green. Keij slotted a pass through the defense, where Rossbach fielded the ball and, in one motion, spun off her defender and tapped it into the back of the goal.

After a scoreless first half, Maine broke the tie when Tereza Holubcova dribbled into the circle and shot it off the backboard for a 1-0 lead at the 31-minute, 12-second mark.

The Black Bears' lead held for less than five minutes before sophomore midfielder Jess Beech equalized the game at 1-all. Beech scored on a penalty stroke at 35:23 after the officials called Maine for an infraction in the circle.

Freshman goalie Brooke Richards made five saves for the win while Mia Borley totaled four saves for Maine.

The Minutewomen outshot the Black Bears, 15-11, and held a 7-6 lead in on-target attempts. The Minutewomen also led in penalty corners, 7-6. Brittany Smith made one defensive save for Maine during a UMass corner play as well.

Massachusetts continues its season with a Sun., March 14 game against UMass Lowell at Noon. The game marks the eighth-annual edition of the Kennedy Cup, which is named in honor of University alumnus John F. Kennedy, strong supporter of both institutions.
