Women's Track & Field Tops Holy Cross And Merrimack In Season Opener

The Minutewomen saw seven individual event wins on the day.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field picked up eight individual event victories after opening its season on home turf with a tri-meet with Holy Cross and Merrimack. The Maroon and White lead with 132 points through 17 events with pole vault to be contested on Saturday, while the Crusaders (123.50) and the Warriors (96.50) follow behind.Â

Freshman Faith Richardson was one of seven individual event winners for the Minutewomen on the day, racing to first in the 100 meter dash in 12.11 seconds, good for the fifth-fastest time in program history. Junior Abby Collins was second (12.38), freshman Caroline Schissel was third (12.66) and sophomore Maeve Swanton was fourth (12.85).

In the 200 meter dash, freshman Tessa Bostwick placed fourth with a time of 26.65 seconds, while classmate Sarah Witt ran to eighth place in 27.35 seconds.Â

Sophomore Grace Pettengill crossed the finish line first for the Minutewomen in the 400 meter dash, clocking in at 1 minute, 03.31 seconds for sixth and freshman Jane Krumsiek took eighth with a time of 1 minute, 04.52. In the 800 meter run, sophomore Samantha Schwers (2:21.20) finished in fifth.

Senior Sydney Clary placed third in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:52.52. Seniors Shannon McAndrew (4:56.32) and Catherine Curtin (4:59.72) finished in seventh and eighth.Â

The Minutewomen claimed the top four spots in 100 hurdles with freshman Lillian Kirry leading the way in first, clocking in at 14.79 seconds with junior Kira Kopec (2nd, 14.89), freshman Alexandra Gonet (3rd, 15.26) and senior Emma Jones (4th, 15.77) following close behind.Â

UMass' 4x100 relay squad of Swanton, freshman Rachel LaBonte, Schissel and sophomore Emily McDonald combined for a time of 49.76 seconds for first place. The 4x400 relay team consisting of Bostwick, freshman Elizabeth Hoenes, Kopec, and S. Witt, clocked a time of 4:06.04 to finish in third.

Freshman Cheyenne Figueroa won discus with a toss of 118 feet, 10 inches, while senior Kelly Alves was second with her 118-foot, 5-inch throw. Figueroa also scored first in hammer throw at 166 feet, 10 inches.

Junior Danielle Notarfrancesco took first in shot put (45'3") and second in hammer throw (162'3"). Senior Lauren LaDere came in second in shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 1 inch.

Freshman Anna Cozzolino finished second in javelin with a mark of 119 feet, 11 inches. Sophomore Courtney Danielsen (103'7"), Jones (101'1") and Hauer (73'6"), placed fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively.

Senior Jada Harris was first in high jump at 5 feet, 7.25 inches, tying a personal best, while freshman Lea Doerries followed in second (5'3.25") and Kopec (5'1.25") in fourth.

In long jump, Kopec claimed first with a distance of 18 feet, 11.75 inches, while senior Danielle Reicherts came in second at 18 feet, 4.25 inches.

The Minutewomen will return to action when the play host to UMass Lowell and Northeastern for a tri-meet on April 3 at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
