Minutemen Fall To Fordham In Double Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the 2021 campaign on Wednesday evening as Fordham converted on a late penalty kick in double overtime to defeat UMass 2-1.
Fordham jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th-minute before the Minutemen equalized near the final moments of the first half. Yosuke Hanya earned a penalty kick in the 43rd-minute with a run down the right side of the box before Filippo Begliardi Ghidini stepped up to the spot and put home his fourth goal of the season into the right side of net. Begliardi Ghidini finished with four shots and three on target for a UMass squad that out-shot Fordham 19-11.
The Rams earned a late penalty kick with just under a minute remaining in the second overtime with Sameer Fathazada converting into the left side of goal to end the game with a 2-1 advantage.
Marvyn Dorching picked up four saves in goal for the Minutemen while Fordham's goalkeeper Josh Lavine saved seven of UMass' eight shots on frame.
The Minutemen hit the road for more Atlantic 10 action this weekend when they head to Philadelphia, Pa. Saturday to take on Saint Joseph's at 5 p.m.
