AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team continues Atlantic 10 play this week with a pair of games, beginning with a Wednesday night matchup against Fordham in the bubble at 7 p.m. The Minutemen will then hit the road for their first road game in league action on Saturday when they head to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Saint Joseph's.
The Boys Are Buzzin'
The Minutemen are unbeaten with a 5-0-1 record through six games of action in the 2021 season. UMass has outscored its opponents 17-5 while averaging 2.83 goals per contest during the span, most recently defeating Rhode Island 5-2 at home on Saturday. Seven different Minutemen have scored goals on the year while five have found the back of the net multiple times. Alec Hughes leads the squad with four goals while Filippo Begliardi Ghidini, Tyler Mann and Graham Brenner have each scored three.
Atlantic 10 Player of the Week
Hughes was named the A-10 Player of the Week after putting home three goals in two games last week. The freshman scored one in a 1-1 draw against La Salle in the mid-week matchup before going on to net two in the opening 20 minutes of a 5-2 win over Rhode Island. Hughes was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week honorable mention squad.
The Opponents
Fordham heads into tomorrow's matchup with a 2-0 record on the season, most recently picking up a 2-0 win over Saint Francis last weekend. The Rams are led offensively by Sameer Fathazada's two goals in the year while the team has outscored their opponents 4-0 in two matches. Saint Joseph's, meanwhile, enters the weekend matchup against the Minutemen with a 1-4 overall record. The Hawks have played just one league match in 2021, a 2-0 loss at La Salle on Sunday.
Looking Ahead
Wednesday's matchup against Fordham marks the final home game currently on the schedule for the Minutemen before they hit the road for three games to wrap up regular season action. UMass will once again matchup with Fordham on April 3 in the Bronx before wrapping up the regular season at Rhode Island on April 10.
