March 27, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Freshman Alec Hughes scored twice in the first 32 minutes of play in the 2-1 victory.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team opened up their three-match road trip with a 2-1 win at Saint Joseph's on Saturday evening at Sweeney Field. Alec Hughes scored two goals for the Minutemen (6-1-1 Overall, 2-1-1 Atlantic 10) in the opening 32 minutes while Ben Shepherd dished out a pair of assists.
Hughes first goal of the evening came in the 23rd-minute off of a Shepherd free kick. Shepherd sent in a pass to the far post that found Hughes on his run as the freshman connected on a header for his fifth goal of the season.
The two connected again just under 10 minutes later as Shepherd played in a ball to Tyler Mann, who found Hughes in the box. Hughes made the turn and sent a right-footed shot into the back of the net from the short side of the keeper at the near post. The goal marked the team-leading sixth goal of the year for Hughes while Shepherd moved into a tie for the team lead in assists on the season with five.
Marvyn Dorchin finished with six saves in goal for the Minutemen as Saint Joseph's out-shot UMass 16 to 11 on the night. Dorchin came up with a key save in the 80th-minute after UMass turned it over in the box, diving to his right to push a shot that had movement on it out to his right.
UMass continues its three-game road trip on Saturday, April 3 when they head to the Bronx for a rematch against Fordham.
