Minutewomen collect first national postseason victory since 1995, face Ohio Monday in Consolation Final
CHARLOTTE – University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated Charlotte, 81-75, on Saturday in the WNIT Consolation Bracket at Bojangles Coliseum. It marks the first win in a national postseason game since 1995 and puts the Minutewomen (15-8) into the WNIT Consolation Final vs. Ohio on Monday at 4 p.m.
Four Minutewomen tallied double-figure scoring performances including a 25-point effort from senior Sam Breen, tying a postseason program record with Octavia Thomas in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Sophomores Angelique Ngalakulondi and Sydney Taylor contributed 16 apiece and junior Destiney Philoxy logged 12 points. The versatile Taylor set a career-high with seven assists, with Philoxy adding six dimes as well.
Ngalakulondi provided a crucial spark off the bench, spearheading a 13-0 first half run with eight points in that nearly-six minute span. Ngalakulondi, 6-of-8 from the floor in the half, also added five boards before the break with UMass ahead 36-23.
But the 49ers answered with a furious third period, wiping out a 16-point Massachusetts lead with their own 17-2 stretch and leveling the score at 40-apiece. The sides traded buckets the rest of the period before Breen and Taylor heated up for the rest of the day. Both played the entire second half and combined for 26 points in that stretch as UMass put the game away, helped by a 14-of-21 team clip from the field.
UMass managed to weather foul trouble as the game hit the home stretch as Breen, Ngalakulondi and Makennah White all had four apiece.
For the day, the Minutewomen shot 54.7% (29-of-53) from the floor to Charlotte's 44.8% (26-of-58) and had a 32-31 edge in rebounds.
