UMass Runs Past Ohio In WNIT Consolation Final, 95-71

March 22, 2021 | Women's Basketball

CHARLOTTE – Sam Breen (27) and Sydney Taylor (25) combined for 52 points to lead four Minutewomen in double figures as the Massachusetts women's basketball team (16-8) built on an 11-point halftime advantage to run away from Ohio (15-10) in the Consolation Final of the WNIT on Monday afternoon at Bojangles Coliseum, 95-71.

Breen's 27 points are the most in a postseason game in program history as the Gibsonia, Pa. native was 12-of-22 from the floor and added nine boards, one shy of her 16th double-double of the season.

UMass saved its best for last with a season-high 95 points, the most for the team since Nov. 21, 2019, on 49% shooting and a 9-of-28 day from beyond the arc. The Minutewomen also dominated the paint, scoring 52 points down low to become the first team in program history to record multiple victories in a national postseason tournament.

Taylor, meanwhile, was 8-of-21 overall and 4-of-14 from three to go along with five rebounds, four assists and a perfect 5-of-5 day from the line. Angelique Ngalakulondi (15 points; 6-of-7 overall, nine rebounds) and Makennah White (10 points, six rebounds) also reached double-figures.

Destiney Philoxy, who entered the day seventh in the NCAA in assists per game, had a game-high nine dimes to pace a UMass squad that finished with 21 assists on 36 made field goals. It's the sixth time this season that Philoxy recorded nine or more assists in a game. The Queens, N.Y. native also added four points and three rebounds.

A 15-3 first quarter run set the tone for Massachusetts, which shot 47% in the opening 10 minutes to open up a six-point lead before extending the cushion to 11 points at half thanks to a 59% shooting performance in the second quarter.

After the teams played an even third quarter, UMass put the game out of reach in the fourth, leading by as many as 26 points late.

Erica Johnson and Cierra Hooks had 18 points apiece for Ohio, which shot 44% overall (27-of-61) and 11-of-31 from three.

UMass finished the season with wins in six of its last eight games, including the last seven contests with just seven active players.
