Men’s Soccer Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats UMass Lowell 4-2

The Minutemen are off to their best start to a season since 1992.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team won their fourth straight game to open up the season after defeating UMass Lowell 4-2 on Thursday evening in the bubble. The win marks the best start for the Minutemen (4-0) since the 1992 season and marks the first win over the River Hawks in the short series dating back to 2018.
The River Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Reziq Banihani goal in the 11th-minute, the first goal surrendered by the Minuteman defense all season.
Tyler Mann fired home the equalizer in the 20th-minute, working the ball to his left for a left footed shot from near the 18-yard box that found the back left side of goal for his second of the season. The Minutemen followed up with another goal to take the lead just over 10 minutes later as Ben Shepherd headed one home off an assist from Yosuke Hanya in the 30th-minute.
The Minutemen found two goals over the final eight minutes of action after the River Hawks tied it up at 2-2 in the 54th-minute. Alec Hughes scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd-minute, his first career goal, off an assist from Ryan Levay. UMass took a two goal lead moments later in the 86th-minute after Graham Brenner headed one in off the assist from Shepherd to bring the score to a final 4-2.
The UMass defense allowed just six shots on the evening, three of which that were saved by Marvyn Dorchin in goal for the Minutemen. Offensively, UMass out-shot UMass Lowell 18 to six while putting nine shots on target led by two on frame from Shepherd, Hanya and Levay.
UMass opens up Atlantic 10 play on Wednesday, March 17 in a 7 p.m. matchup against La Salle.
