Minutemen Play To 1-1 Draw Against La Salle In Atlantic 10 Opener

Alec Hughes scored the opening goal for both squads in the 13th-minute for his second of the season.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against La Salle in the Atlantic 10 opener on Wednesday evening in the bubble. Freshman Alec Hughes scored in the 13th-minute for the Minutemen (4-0-1 Overall, 0-0-1 Atlantic 10) to mark his second of the year.
UMass found themselves in their attacking end early and often against the Explorers (3-1-1 Overall, 0-0-1 Atlantic 10) as they came up with two shots in the opening minutes beginning with a Yosuke Hanya attempt after a run from the midfield followed by a shot by Filippo Begliardi Ghidini that was blocked by a La Salle defender.
Hughes' second collegiate goal came in the 13th-minute with traffic in from of goal off an assist from Ben Shepherd. Hughes nearly broke through just over seven minutes earlier with a right footed shot from the side of goal after beating the La Salle keeper with a dribble before the ball was saved away by an Explorer defender.
The Minutemen posted 20 shots on the night to La Salle's 11, including two in the early moments of the first overtime period as Begliardi Ghidini and Tommy Case both took attempts at goal. UMass put five of its shots on goal while La Salle put seven on target, six of which were saved by Minuteman goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin.
UMass continues home conference play on Saturday when they play host to Rhode Island for a 4 p.m. start in the bubble.
