Penalty Kick Sends St. John’s Past UMass In Season Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team fell 1-0 to St. John's in the season opener on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium. The Minutewomen surrendered a second-half penalty kick to the Red Storm that proved to be the difference.
St. John's attempted four shots and put one on target in the first 45, a header from Brooke Boyd in the 11th-minute that was saved away by UMass goalkeeper Alyssa Chase. Chase finished with a game-high four saves and faced 10 Red Storm shots on the day.
The Minutewomen created their first scoring opportunity of the day in the 24th-minute as Jenny Hipp fired a shot towards goal that went wide left off a setup pass from Olivia Gouldsbury. Hipp attempted three shots in the contest while Ella Curry put her only shot attempt on target in the 85th-minute, sending a shot to the bottom right corner of goal that was saved.
St. John's was awarded a penalty kick in the 66th-minute after a foul on the UMass goalkeeper and was converted by Jessica Garziano for the lone goal of the afternoon.
UMass returns to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon for the home opener against Stony Brook at 2 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
