Six Minutemen In Double Figures As UMass Defeats UMass Lowell, 92-81

AMHERST, Mass. – Six Minutemen finished in double figures as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team defeated UMass Lowell 92-81 on Wednesday in the Mullins Center. Javohn Garcia led the Minutemen (4-3 Overall) with a tied for game-high 18 points and converted on 9-of-11 attempts from the free throw line.

UMass closed out a back and forth first half on a 9-0 run to take a 37-27 lead into the locker room as the Minutemen connected on seven of their final eight field goals in the half. The run continued into the second half and grew to 22-0 after consecutive C.J. Kelly 3-pointers followed by one from T.J. Weeks Jr. with 16:02 remaining to give the Minutemen a 50-27 lead. Weeks and C.J. Kelly both finished with 12 points on the night while Weeks added six boards.

The Minutemen outscored the River Hawks 30-6 over 9:17 of game time before the visitors went on a quick 12-0 run to pull within 12. UMass Lowell connected on eight of their last nine shots with 3:17 left as they pulled within eight with just under two minutes remaining before the Minutemen closed out the game at the line on their way to converting on 25-of-33 from the stripe.

Trent Buttrick added 11 points and four boards for UMass to finish in double figures for the seventh consecutive game to start the year. Rich Kelly chipped in 11 as well and dished out five of UMass' 20 assists on the night. Michael Steadman scored 10 points in his first action of the season, including eight straight to help the Minutemen rebuild their lead to 18 points heading into the under-eight media timeout.

UMass remains at home for its next two games and is set to host Rutgers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
