UMass Downs Rutgers On Fernandes Buzzer-Beater, 85-83

Noah Fernandes hit the game-winning 3-pointer has time expired and finished with his first career double-double.
AMHERST, Mass. – Noah Fernandes knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team completed a 17-point comeback win over Rutgers on Saturday in the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (5-3 Overall) took their first lead of the afternoon on a pair of Fernandes free throws with 17-seconds left before the junior put in the game-winner.

Rutgers (3-3 Overall) regained an 83-82 lead with just under five seconds remaining on a Paul Mulcahy shot from in close before Fernandes went the length of the court and hit a shot falling to his left to win the game as time expired.

Fernandes finished with his first career double-double as he put in 16 points and dished out career-high 11 assists while going 8-of-9 at the line.

The Minutemen made a late push to take the lead after converting on six of their final seven shots from the field, including a stretch where they made 3-of-4 from range. Trent Buttrick knocked down one of those 3-pointers with 1:15 left to pull the Minutemen within a point of Rutgers at 79-78.

C.J. Kelly scored a game and season-high 24 points and finished 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from range. The junior guard helped the Minutemen stay in it with back-to-back 3-pointers with 17:15 remaining as Rutgers took its biggest lead of the day at 51-34 early in the second half. Kelly scored 14 of his 24 points in the first seven minutes of the second.

UMass pulled within single digits for the first time since the 12:02 mark in the first half with 6:27 to go on a Dibaji Walker free throw. Buttrick scored five straight for the Minutemen as they made it a one possession game following a pair of free throws and a triple from the graduate student. Fernandes followed by making four straight at the line to give UMass its first lead.

Rich Kelly finished in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-7 from 3-point range to go along with three steals while T.J. Weeks Jr. added 11 points off the bench. Greg Jones finished with a team-high six boards while C.J. Kelly and Javohn Garcia both hauled in four each.

The Minutemen wrap up the three-game homestand in the Mullins Center on Saturday, Dec. 4 against Harvard at noon.
