Minutemen Record Third Straight Shutout At Home, Draw With VCU

The Minutemen outshot the Rams 21-14 on the day, including a 17-6 advantage across the second half and overtimes.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team recorded its third consecutive shutout at home as they played to a 0-0 draw against VCU on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (8-4-5 Overall, 2-2-4 Atlantic 10) currently sit at 10 points in the A-10 table and await the remainder of results across the league to determine a potential postseason appearance.
UMass outshot VCU 21-14 on the afternoon, including a 17-6 shot advantage in the second half and overtime periods. Forwards Alec Hughes and Filippo Begliardi Ghidini paced the Minuteman offense with four shots each while James McPherson added three from off the bench.
McPherson had one of the best opportunities for either side in the overtime period as he sent a shot on target in the 109th-minute that was saved away by Mario Sequeira. The ball found Alec Hughes on the left side of goal for a shot that missed the target.
Ryan Levay nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 30th-minute with a shot from outside of the box that was saved before deflecting off the crossbar and out to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Marvyn Dorchin finished with six saves on his way to his sixth shutout of the season while Sequeira added five saves for the Rams.
