#5 Minnesota State Rallies Past #1 Massachusetts Hockey, 6-3

Faith, Lopina and Kiefiuk all scored their first goals of the season in the setback for the Minutemen.
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 1 University of Massachusetts hockey held a 3-0 lead late in the second, but No. 5 Minnesota State (2-0) scored six unanswered goals to rally past the Minutemen (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
"I thought we played pretty well for the first 35 minutes," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "The last five minutes of the second period we had some breakdowns, allowed the back in the game and then they just took over. It was extremely lopsided through the third period. Similar to last night I feel our youth exposed us a bit, but Minnesota State is an excellent hockey team. That's the most soundly we've been beaten since probably my first year here."
UMass jumped out to an early lead, just 4:17 into the contest. Senior Ty Farmer collected the puck and dished freshman Scott Morrow at the opposite point and Morrow found junior Eric Faith with a cross-ice pass for the quick strike that made it 1-0, Minutemen.
In the final minute of play in the opening stanza, sophomore hammered home a puck from senior Bobby Trivigno and Colin Felix through traffic in the slot, increasing the margin to 2-0.
Junior Cal Kiefiuk added UMass' third of the contest just 42 seconds into the second period, cleaning up a loose puck at the back post from freshman Lucas Mercuri and Farmer that pushed the lead to three.
Minnesota State took one back, however, at the 18:48 mark of the second with Nathan Smith converting on a breakaway to pull the Mavericks within 3-1.
Smith later stuck again at the 4:28 mark of the third and Onreij Pavel followed with the equalizer just 15 seconds later.
Jake Livingstone's goal on a rush up the ice from Smith and Ryan Sandelin at the 10:14 mark put Minnesota State on top, 4-3, while Julian Napravnik added some insurance just 1:13 later.
Brendan Furry capped the scoring for the Mavericks with his tally from Napravnik and Andy Carroll at the 13:11 mark.
Minnesota State finished with a 45-22 shot advantage over the Minutemen and both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play.
Matt Murray finished with 39 saves for UMass and Dryden McKay stopped 19 shots for the Mavericks.
The Minutemen will be idle next weekend before returning to action on Friday, October 15, beginning a home-and-home with #20 American International in Springfield at 7 p.m.
