AMHERST, Mass. – Riding a three-game winning streak, the UMass men's basketball team will look to remain near the top of the Atlantic 10 standings on Sunday afternoon when the Minutemen host Davidson at the Mullins Center on CBSSN.
Tre Ball
Tre Mitchell is averaging 20.5 points per game this year, good for 25th in the NCAA and first in the Atlantic 10. He is one of just six underclassmen in the top-25.
Mitchell is one of only 28 players in the country, and two players in the Atlantic 10, with two 30+ point games this season. Dating back to last season, Mitchell has reached double-figures in 31 straight games.
On Dec. 16 at La Salle, Tre Mitchell had a career-high 37 points, tied for the eighth most points in UMass single-game history. In just 39 career games, Mitchell is already tied for seventh in career 30+ point games in UMass history:
Mitchell wasted no time in confirming that the hype is real on Dec. 11 vs. Northeastern with 31 points and 11 rebounds in his season debut, including 19 points and six boards in the first half alone. Mitchell's performance put him on a list with some of the UMass greats, tying him for the fourth most points in a season opener in program history.
Mitchell's 712 career points have him on track to reach 1000 career points this season. He would be only the fifth player in program history to reach 1000 career points in just two seasons, joining Julius Erving, Jim McCoy, Luwane Pipkins and Chaz Williams.
Streaking
The Minutemen are in the midst of a season-best three-game winning streak, where they are outscoring their opponents by an average of 12.3 points per game.
UMass has four players averaging double-figures in that span, led by Tre Mitchell's 17.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg.
On the defensive end, Massachusetts is holding its opponents to 63.7 ppg and allowing just 15.0 field goal attempts per game. UMass held Fordham to just 15 points in the first half on Jan. 24, the fewest since holding Maine to the same number on Dec. 22, 2017.
The series with Davidson
Overall, Davidson leads the series against the Minutemen 9-5 since first playing in 1982, including a victory last season at Belk Arena.
Home again, home again
UMass is at the end of five-of-six scheduled game stretch in the Mullins Center, where the Minutemen are 3-2 on the young season. The Minutemen were 11-5 at home last season, marking the third time in the last four seasons that Massachusetts had won at least 11 games at the Mullins Center.
This season, the Minutemen are averaging 87.4 points per game at home and shooting 43% from the floor with five players averaging double-figures.
High octane offense
The Minutemen have had no problem putting the ball in the basket early on this season, and currently rank 20th in the nation and second in the Atlantic 10 with 82.8 points per game. Massachusetts started the year with at least three players in double-figures in its first seven games this season, and scored at least 75 points in each of its those seven games for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
Connecting from deep
UMass used red shot shooting from three to bolt out to a 29-point halftime lead at Fordham on Jan. 17. The Minutemen finished the day 10-of-28, marking the third time this season UMass has hit at least 10 threes in a game.
Overall, the Minutemen are 55th in the NCAA and third in the A-10 averaging 8.9 3-pt FG makes per game.
Glue Guy
Freshman Ronnie DeGray III has started all eight games at the for the Minutemen early in the season and is averaging 9.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg and shooting 65% from the floor (30-of-46). DeGray's also adapted quickly to the pace of A-10 play, where he is averaging more than 33 minutes per game and contributing 10.2 ppg (fourth on team), 5.8 rpg and 1.8 apg.
He had a career night on Jan. 13 vs. Rhode Island, logging a season-high 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals, highlighted by a big three in overtime that put UMass up for good.
He followed it up with a career-high 10 rebounds along with eight points to secure his first Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week nod on Monday.
O Captain, My Captain
Last season, senior captain Carl Pierre became the 52nd player in team history to reach 1000 career points, and cracked the top-20 on UMass' all-time scoring list on Jan. 17 at Fordham. Pierre is also fourth all-time at UMass in career three-point field goals made, and hit his 250th on Dec. 11 vs. Northeastern:
Getting to the line
UMass, which has drawn an average of 22.1 fouls per game on its opponent, is getting to the free throw line an average of 27.2 times per game, the highest rate in the country. UMass is 163-of-218 from the stripe in 2020-21, which accounts for 24.6% of its scoring (seventh in the NCAA).
