Minutemen DMR Squad Earns Bronze On Day One Of Atlantic 10 Championships

The Minutemen scored in three events on day one and earned seven spots in Sunday’s finals on the track.
KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field earned a bronze medal in distance medley relay and sent seven runners into Sunday's finals on day one of the Atlantic 10 Championships at Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse. The Minutemen are currently tied for fourth out of 10 teams with 19 points though five scored events.
UMass' distance medley relay squad of Luke Militello, Christopher Matthews, Nicholas Santos and Erik Engstrom combined to run 10 minutes, 16.72 seconds to third for the Minutemen's top performance of day one.
Seniors Myles McDermott and Noah Kortkamp both provided points in long jump with personal bests that landed them in fourth and fifth at 23 feet, 5.5 inches and 23 feet, 2.75 inches, respectively. Both jumps were the best performances for UMass since 2011 as McDermott now holds the No. 5 mark on the program's all-time list.
The Minutemen also collected points in weight throw with junior Coston O'Brien taking fifth with a toss of 59 feet, 4.75 inches.
Kortkamp was UMass' first runner of the day to advance to Sunday's finals, taking sixth in the prelims of 60 meter hurdles at 8.42 seconds.
Two Minutemen earned spots in the 400 meter dash final as sophomore Lucas Honohan was fifth in 50.27 seconds and junior Colin Stoddard followed in sixth with a time of 50.63 seconds.
Jordan Howard ran 6.94 seconds to fourth in the 60 meter dash trial and moved on to finals in a second event as he was fifth in the 200 meter dash preliminaries at 22.34, while Michael Cutherbert advanced in the event, as well, taking sixth in 22.35 seconds.
Senior Connor Ross was UMass' seventh and final qualifier, clocking in at 2 minutes, 30.73 seconds, good for seventh in the preliminaries of 1,000 meter run.
Two Minutemen sit in the top-eight of heptathlon through four events. Thomas O'Donoghue is currently seventh (2,482) and Matthew Tarantino (2,409) is eighth.
Action will resume for UMass at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Sunday, March 1, beginning with high jump at 9 a.m.
