Quick Hits: No. 8 Minutemen Split Pair With #14/15 UMass Lowell
- UMass split its season series with UMass Lowell last weekend, rebounding from a heartbreaking 3-2 loss on the road on Friday with a 5-3 victory on Saturday at the Mullins Center.
- On Friday UMass Lowell opened the scoring at the 4:32 mark of the first period and added another at 13:30, which was ultimately called back for goaltender interference.
- In the closing minutes of the first, UMass came up with the equalizer on the power play as junior John Leonard was there at the doorstep to clean up a rebound from Marc Del Gaizo at 18:27, leveling the score at 1-1.
- Sophomore Bobby Trivigno later put the Minutemen on top, 2-1, midway through the second period. Seconds after a UMass Lowell penalty expired, Trivigno drove home a cross-ice feed from Suter and Del Gaizo for his ninth of the season at 11:03.
- However in the third, the River Hawks managed to tie the score at 2-2 at the 7:37 mark. Then with the potential for overtime looming, UMass Lowell secured the victory with Chris Schultz sneaking a tough-angle shot past goaltender Matt Murray from the corner at 19:33.
- the Minutemen finished with a 40-22 advantage in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the River Hawks were 0-for-3.
- On Saturday junior John Leonard's second hat trick in the past three games, which included two late third-period tallies, helped carry UMass to the 5-3 win.
- UMass Lowell opened the scoring midway through the first when Reid Stefanson collected the puck off a turnover by the Minutemen and fed it up the boards to Anthony Baxter who found Chase Blackmun in the high slot for the tally through traffic at 10:52.
- In the second period, UMass responded by scoring three times in a span of 3 minutes, 13 seconds to swing its fortunes for a 3-1 advantage. The flurry started with senior Jake McLaughlin rifling a shot from the blueline from sophomore Anthony Del Gaizo and Jake Gaudet past a screened Tyler Wall at the 6:14 mark.
- Moments later, Leonard potted his first of the night, depositing a River Hawks' turnover into the back of the UMass Lowell net, cleaning up his own rebound at 6:27.
- Freshman Reed Lebster then added his eighth of the year 9:27 into the stanza, knocking in a loose puck at the doorstep off a rebound from Gaudet and freshman Zac Jones.
- The River Hawks clawed back in the third, though, converting with John McDonald converting on their first power play of the night from Seth Barton just 24 seconds into the third. Colin O'Neill took an outlet pass from Brian Chambers and Connor Sodergren and scored on the rush to pull UMass Lowell level with the Minutemen, 3-3, at the 8:31 mark.
- With less than five minutes to go in regulation, however, Leonard took over for UMass, turning on the jets, splitting the River Hawks' defensemen and roofing the go-ahead goal over Wall at 16:25. Senior Jack Suter and sophomore Ty Farmer earned the assists on the play.
- Leonard later added a diving empty net goal to complete his hat trick in the closing seconds, beating a UMass Lowell player to the puck down the ice after senior Niko Hildenbrand cleared it from the defensive zone.
- UMass heavily out-shot the River Hawks, 50-18, and were 0-for-5 on the power play, while UMass Lowell was 1-for-2 with the man advantage. The Minutemen also dominated over the faceoff dots, winning 42 of 59 draws (71.2%), led by 14-for-17 (82.4%) and 12-for-16 (75%) efforts from Suter and Gaudet, respectively.
- Matt Murray had 15 saves on the night and collected his third assist of the season on the empty net goal.
Two Minutemen In The Hobey Race
- Junior forwards Mitchell Chaffee and John Leonard are among 79 nominees for the 2020 Hobey Baker Memorial Award. The list of candidates was announced on January 16, coinciding with the start of the Hobey Baker fan voting, which is now live and will run until Sunday, March 8.
- Phase two of fan voting will commence on March 18 following the announcement of the top-10 nominees. The Hobey Hat Trick finalists will be revealed on April 2 with the winner being named on April 10 at the Frozen Four in Detroit, Michigan.
Leonard Making Himself At Home In The Record Book
- With seven goals in the past three games, including his first two hat tricks of his career, junior John Leonard has been setting milestones on a regular basis this month.
- During his four-point night against Providence on Feb. 8, Leonard broke the program single-season record for goals scored by a junior, surpassing UMass Hall of Famer Thomas Poeck's 17 in 2002-03.
- Leonard's Feb. 21 tally at UMass Lowell marked his 50th of his career as he became just the seventh player in program history to reach the milestone and the first to reach 50 goals having played his entire career in Hockey East.
- His hat trick against the River Hawks the following night brought his season total to 24 goals, which set new UMass records for most goals scored in a season in the program's Hockey East era (tied for fifth all-time). He also set new program marks most goals scored in Hockey East play in a season (18), tied the program's single-season record for game-winning goals (5) and took over sole possession of the program's career game-winning goals record (9).
- Leonard enters this weekend series against UConn tied for fourth in program history for career goals with 53 and 13th in career points with 99. With his next point, Leonard will become just the sixth member of the 50-goal, 100-point club in UMass history, joining Pat Keenan (1970-73), Warren Norris (1993-97), Rob Bonneau (1993-97), Stephen Werner (2001-06) and Michael Pereira (2010-14).
- On the single-season goals list, Leonard is two behind Bonneau (26, 1993-94) for third all-time and is four shy of Keenan (28, 1970-71) for third.
Setting The Standard
- Part of a program-transforming recruiting class that arrived on campus in 2017, the current Minuteman junior class has already seen the highest three-year wins total in program history at 67 and counting.
- Mitchell Chaffee and John Leonard are the top career point producers of that class and are well on their way re-writing the UMass record book. Among Minutemen who played their entire careers in Hockey East, Leonard has scored the most goals through his junior year with 53 to date followed by Greg Mauldin (48) and Chaffee (47).
- In UMass' Hockey East era, only James Marcou (130) has scored more points in three seasons in the Maroon and White than Chaffee and Leonard.
- Out of the entire NCAA Division I junior class, Chaffee and Leonard trail only Arizona State's Johnny Walker (60) in career goals. Amon the NCAA's juniors, Leonard ranks fifth in career points (99) and Chaffee ranks tied for seventh (95).???
And The Beat Goes On
- Despite the loss of two NHL caliber defenseman 2019 Hobey Baker winner Cale Makar and Hockey East All-Star Mario Ferraro, both of whom are currently patrolling NHL bluelines for the Colorado Avalanche and the San Jose Sharks, the Minutemen's defensive corps is still among the national leaders in point production this season.
- UMass' defensemen have scored 19 goals, which is tied for eighth nationally, while the squad's 82 points by defensemen ranks tied for seventh. Minutemen blueliners average 11.74 shots per-game, which leads the nation.
- Individually, freshman Matt Kessel leads all rookie defensemen nationally with seven goals and is UMass' top goal scorer from the blueline. Among all defensemen across Division I hockey, Kessel is tied for 10th in goals. Senior Jake McLaughlin leads the country in plus-minus at a +27 through 31 games.
Finishing Strong
- The Minutemen have been a strong third period team this season, currently tied for first in the nation with nine game-winning goals in the final stanza and a No. 2 ranking in plus-minus at. +26 though 31 games. UMass is averaging 1.45 goals per-game in the third, which ranks third nationally. The squad has scored 45% of its goals in the third with 45 of 100 coming in the frame.
- Individually, 14 of John Leonard's 24 goals have been third period tallies, which is good for the national lead, three have been game winners.
- UMass has outscored its opponents 45-20 in the third period this season.
Stingy Goalie
- For the second time in his career, Matt Murray was selected as the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 9 after posting two wins in a weekend sweep of Maine.
- Murray stopped 43 of 45 shots over the two games for a .956 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average, not allowing an even strength goal to the Black Bears.
- Currently the St. Albert, Alberta native is 10-5-0 on the year with a 1.91 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. He currently ranks seventh nationally in goals against average, second in Hockey East to teammate Filip Lindberg and 11th in winning percentage (.647). Murray posted his 40th career win on Feb. 22 vs. UMass Lowell and is third in program history for career wins, trailing only Gabe Winer (50, 2001-06) and Paul Dainton (45, 2007-11).

- On the back of a five-point weekend against Providence, which included his first career hat trick as part of a career-high four-point effort against the Friars, Leonard was recognized as NCAA Hockey's No. 1 Star of the Week, Hockey East Player of the Week and UMass Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 10.

- Lindberg, who started all four of UMass' NCAA Tournament games in 2018-19, ended his freshman campaign second in the nation with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. He is the top returning goaltender in the nation statistically in both categories for 2019-20.
