No. 8/9 Hockey Falters Late In 3-2 Loss At UConn
February 28, 2020 | Hockey
Leonard scores twice, but the Huskies net two in the final 1:31 of regulation to skate past the Minutemen.
HARTFORD, Conn. – No. 8/9 University of Massachusetts hockey saw UConn rally for two goals with less than two minutes to go in regulation, falling to the Huskies 3-2 on Friday night at the XL Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 19-11-2, 12-8-2 in Hockey East play, while UConn improves to 15-13-4, 12-8-2 in league action.
"I think ultimately we got what we deserved tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Hats off to UConn, they're playing well. They did a good job tonight. I thought they were the better team and we found a way to be ahead late in the game and then completely fell apart with our structure defensively, kind of inexcusable. It would have been stealing a game tonight, but it's a tough way to lose late in the game. We've been a good third period team most of the year."
UConn opened the scoring 8:32 into the second as Carter Berger snapped a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle off a feed from Jachym Kondelik on the rush.
Before the period was complete, though, UMass came up with the equalizer. After receiving the puck from Niko Hildenbrand and Bobby Trivigno, John Leonard sent a shot through traffic from the blueline that found its way past Tomas Vomacka at the 13:56 mark.
Midway through the third, Leonard converted on the Minutemen's only power play of the night to give UMass a 2-1 lead, taking the puck from defensemen Zac Jones and Marc Del Gaizo and circling the top of the zone before snapping home a wrister from the slot at 9:03.
With the period winding down, however, Marc Gatcomb drove to the net to pick up the tying goal for the Huskies at 18:29 from Kale Howarth and Berger.
Howarth then knocked the game-winner at the top of the crease from Berger and Wyatt Newpower with 7.8 seconds remaining in regulation.
UConn out-shot the Minutemen, 38-23 on the night and went 0-for-1 on the power play to UMass' 1-for-1. Sophomore goaltender Filip Lindberg made 35 saves for the Minutemen, while Vomaka totaled 21 stops for the Huskies.
With two goals in the contest, Leonard extended his scoring streak to four straight with nine goals during that stretch, three multi-goal performances. His first tally of the night marked his 100th career point to become just the sixth player in program history to achieve both the 100 point and 50 goal milestones. He currently leads the nation with 26 tallies on the year.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, February 29, closing out the season series at the Mullins Center, which will be Senior Night for the Minutemen. Puck drop is slated for 8 p.m.
