Minutewomen have bye before returning to action on Sat., Feb. 22
ST. LOUIS – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was unable to bounce back from a tough second quarter as the Minutewomen fell at Saint Louis, 71-56, on Sunday at Chaifetz Arena. With the loss, UMass drops to 16-10 (6-7 Atlantic 10) and the Billikens are now 15-10 and 7-5 versus league foes.
Senior Hailey Leidel and sophomore Destiney Philoxy each poured in 18 points for Massachusetts in the loss, while junior Sam Breen was just short of a double-double with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Vashnie Perry's five assists were a game-high and freshman Maeve Donnelly had three blocks. Donnelly now has blocked 68 shots on the season, tying the rookie with Maggie Mulligan (2017-18) and Kate Mills (2007-08) for the single-season program record.
A 14-2 Saint Louis run late in the second quarter gave the Bills a lead 13 before a Leidel trey cut the deficit back to 10 at halftime. Breen had 10 points in the first 20 minutes and both Leidel and Perry chipped in seven apiece as the game went to intermission with SLU ahead, 39-29.
A quiet stretch for Massachusetts in the third period saw SLU put together 16 straight points over seven-plus minutes. Breen ended the drought with 24 seconds left on a trey that rolled around the rim and in.
Philoxy powered the Maroon and White in the final frame with 13 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting, but in the end Massachusetts could not bounce back from the earlier deficit.
For the day, UMass was 21-of-62 (33.9%) from the field and SLU was 26-of-53 (49.1%). UMass took advantage of 14 turnovers and converted that into 24 points, but the Billikens had the rebounding margin, 43-29.
Ciaja Harbison was 8-of-14 from the field for SLU for a game-high 21 points.
With a bye upcoming, Massachusetts now has six days to prepare for its annual Play4Kay Game, a Sat., Feb. 22 tilt with Davidson at the Mullins Center. Opening tip is scheduled for noon in Amherst.
