February 15, 2020 | Men's Track & Field
O’Brien leads the way, now just 5.25 inches off the UMass weight throw record, taking second at the meet.
BOSTON – University of Massachusetts men's track and field saw a host of personal bests set at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. Among those marks were two top-five all-time performances.
Leading the way, junior Coston O'Brien improved his No. 2 all-time performance in the UMass record book for weight throw, taking second at the meet with a toss of 61 feet, 4.25 inches to pull within 5.25 inches of the program's longest standing record.
In 200 meter dash, senior Michael Cuthbert, who holds the program's indoor record in the event, ran a season-best 21.71 seconds to 17th. Jordan Howard ran an indoor career best, 21.97 seconds, which ranks fifth all-time in program history and was good for 32nd at the meet.
Two more Minutemen were just shy of cracking the top-five all-time with their PRs. Sophomore Herlin Rijo ran 1 minute, 52.72 seconds to 34th in 800 meter, a mere .06 seconds off matching the fifth-best time in program history. Classmate Lucas Honohan was only .04 seconds shy of becoming the first new entry in UMass' 400 meter top five in a decade, running 48.67 seconds to claim 19th in a field of 236 competitors.
In the 4x400 meter relay, the Minutemen's team of Colin Stoddard, Christopher Matthews, Kevin Shannon and Honohan combined for a time of 3 minutes, 18.76 seconds to claim ninth of 53 in the event.
UMass will remain idle until Saturday, February 29, when the squad will open up the Atlantic 10 Championships at URI at 9 a.m.
