Dayton Escapes With 52-51 Win Over Minutewomen
February 12, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Massachusetts falls to league-leading Flyers in one-point contest
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball led in the final minute of regulation, but Dayton's Jayla Scaife made two free throws in the last 10 seconds as the Flyers escaped the Mullins Center with a 52-51 result on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Minutewomen to 16-9 overall and 6-6 in Atlantic 10 play and league-leading Dayton improves to 18-7 and 11-0 against league foes.
Â
Massachusetts leveled the score at 50-apiece with 37 seconds left on a layup by junior Sam Breen, who was fouled on the play. After Breen converted the three-point play at the free throw line, Dayton used a timeout to advance the ball on the subsequent inbounds pass before Scaife was fouled and put the Flyers ahead by one via the charity stripe. Out of timeouts by that point, UMass inbounded on the baseline and was unable to get a shot off before time expired.
Â
Not lost in the shuffle was a double-double performance by Breen (23 points, 12 rebounds) and senior Hailey Leidel drained 13 points. Junior Bre Hampton-Bey handed out a game-high six assists and freshman Maeve Donnelly logged three blocks. Donnelly now has 65 blocks on the season and now ranks third all-time at UMass on the single-season list in that category.
Â
The Minutewomen carried a 35-34 lead into the fourth quarter and swelled the advantage to five, but a 7-0 Dayton run returned the lead to the Flyers and led to a timeout for the Maroon and White with 7:04 left. From there into the final minute the sides traded buckets as the game remained within two possessions.
UMass led after one quarter, 11-7, closing out a 7-0 run on a buzzer-beating trey from sophomore Destiney Philoxy. Dayton put together a 13-0 stretch in the second stanza to pull ahead by eight before the Minutewomen pulled back within three at the half.
Â
Dayton had a slight edge in points in the paint (22-18) but the Minutewomen led in second chance points, 13-11, thanks to 13 offensive rebounds.
Â
For the Flyers, Kyla Whitehead's 11 points were a team-high and Julia Chandler had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Scaife had four steals.
