THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-ST. JOHN'S PREVIEW
 • Winners in three straight, Massachusetts women's basketball is back in the home confines of the Mullins Center as the Minutewomen play host to BIG EAST foe St. John's at 2 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 13.

• Jim Cain (PxP) and UMass alumnus Adam Frenier '04 (color) will be on the television headset on NESN and ESPN+, with Nick McGahan and Scott Wiktorowski producing the broadcast.

• Sunday's game marks a homecoming of sorts as three-year UMass letter winner Vashnie Perry, a 2020 program alumna and co-captain, has joined the St. John's staff as a graduate assistant. Perry appeared in 74 career games making 47 starts, helping the Minutewomen achieve a program-record 11-game winning streak last season and finish with 20 victories, tying an all-time best.

• It's been a packed week of hoops for UMass, which is playing its third game since Tuesday. The Minutewomen tipped off the home schedule with a Dec. 8 conference-opening win over Rhode Island (79-69), before heading up to New Hampshire on Dec. 10 and coming home victorious over the Wildcats, 74-55.

• Massachusetts never trailed against either New Hampshire or Rhody, and in the UNH win had a balanced effort with four double-figure scorers. Sam Breen (17 pts, 11 reb) led the way for Massachusetts with her second double-double of the season, while Destiney Philoxy nearly matched the feat with 11 points and a career-high-tying nine assists, one short of her first collegiate double-double performance. Sydney Taylor (17) and Maddie Sims (12) also scored in double-figures.

• Outside of the overtime loss at Boston College on Nov. 29, the Minutewomen have only played from behind for 7:23 of game time thus far on the season.

• UMass and St. John's last met in November 2019 down in Queens, with the Red Storm taking an 82-71 result. It was the final loss before the squad began its record 11-game winning streak and the only setback in a span of 15 contests.

• St. John's sits at 2-2 on the season and is looking to bounce back from losses vs. Villanova (Dec. 6) and at Delaware (Dec. 10). Leilani Correa had a career-high 35 points against Delaware, the most in a single game by a St. John's player since the 1994-95 season.
