Need to Knows
• University of Massachusetts women's basketball heads on the road once again for a Sun., Jan. 26 matinee at George Washington. Opening tip is set for noon at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
• The Minutewomen are looking to get back in the win column after two tough losses at Rhode Island (Jan. 19) and vs. VCU (Jan. 22). A victory on Sunday would be the first over the Colonials since Jan. 12, 2013 and end a seven-game slide vs. Massachusetts' A-10 rival from the nation's capital. It would also be UMass' first-ever win at the Charles E. Smith Center.
• A strong start vs. VCU ultimately was not enough last Wednesday night as UMass was unable to hang on to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. But the tide turned VCU's way during a difficult shooting second stanza that saw UMass connect on just one of 14 field goals. It was a 9-0 Rams run that ultimately put the visitors ahead for the remainder of the game and swelled into a 13-2 stretch to close the half,
• Sophomore Destiney Philoxy was 5-of-11 from the field and had 12 points to lead the Minutewomen, followed up by 11 points from senior Hailey Leidel. Freshman Maeve Donnelly's seven rebounds were a game-high and Philoxy's five assists on the night led the squad.
• At Rhody, UMass wiped out a 15-point deficit in the second half and took its first lead with 4:24 to play in regulation. But a back-and-forth finish ultimately did not go the way of the Minutewomen as URI escaped with a 69-66 triumph to snap a program-record 11-game winning streak for the Maroon and White.
• The 11-game winning streak surpassed the previous UMass record of nine straight triumphs and, at the time it ended, was tied for the third-longest active run in the country.
• Leading up to the URI game, UMass recorded its first 4-0 start in Atlantic 10 play since the 1996-97 season; a feat that last occurred before any current member of the roster was born.
• Senior Hailey Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at Boston University on Dec. 11. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,671) needs eight points to tie former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile (1992-96; 1,679) for No. 3 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80.
• In the St. Bonaventure game on Jan. 8, Leidel eclipsed both the 1,600-point and 600-rebound milestones, becoming one of only three players in program history to accomplish such a feat. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 24 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 41 of her last 42 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.
• Among multiple crucial additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the interior shot-altering presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly. With 52 blocks, she has tied the UMass freshman record–Melissa Gurile had 52 stops in her rookie season of 1992-93.
• The Minutewomen return home after Sunday's game and focus on their annual Field Trip Day game, which will take place at noon vs. Richmond on Wed., Jan. 29. The game will be nationally televised on NBCSN and admission is free for the contest.
