Leidel ascends to No. 3 on program’s all-time scoring list despite tough loss for Minutewomen
WASHINGTON – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was unable to answer a second half George Washington rally as the Minutewomen fell, 50-47, on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center. Following the loss, UMass is now 14-6 on the year, 4-3 in the Atlantic 10, while the Colonials are now 8-11 and 2-4 against league foes.
It was a 12-2 run late in the third quarter that turned momentum toward GW and saw the Minutewomen trail for the first time in the game. Still, Massachusetts kept the Colonials within a one possession reach down the stretch of regulation, but after a timeout with 4.9 seconds left, UMass ultimately ran out of time before getting off a potential game-tying three-pointer.
Senior Hailey Leidel had a game-high 19 points, including 15 from beyond the arc, and passed former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile (1992-96) for No. 3 on the program's all-time scoring list. Leidel, now with 1,690 points in her career, needs 101 to match Octavia Thomas (1992-96) for the No. 2 spot.
Juniors Sam Breen and Bre Hampton-Bey pulled down eight rebounds apiece and Hampton-Bey along with sophomore Destiney Philoxy handed out three assists each. Freshman Maeve Donnelly contributed a pair of blocks on the day to set a new freshman program record with 54 stops on the season. Gurile previously held the record with 52 blocks in the 1992-93 campaign.
It was a strong start to the afternoon for the Maroon and White as the visitors came out with an early 4-of-7 first quarter showing from three-point land, helping UMass to an 18-12 lead after the first 10 minutes. Twelve of Leidel's 19 points on the day came in the first half and the first 15 from beyond the arc.
GW began chipping away during a tough shooting stretch for the Minutewomen in the second quarter, in which the squad was just 2-of-15 (13.3%) from the field but still carried a 26-20 lead into halftime. Although the Colonials took their first lead late in the third period, Hampton-Bey hit a clutch right-corner three in the waning seconds of the frame to level the score at 39-all heading into the fourth.
The Minutewomen now turn their focus to a Wed., Jan. 29 Field Trip Day matchup with Richmond at the Mullins Center. Admission is free; no tickets are required for the noon game. For more information on Field Trip Day, click here.
