O'Brien's Win In Weight Throw Highlights Men's Track & Field's Day At BU
January 25, 2020 | Men's Track & Field
The junior posted the best weight throw mark in program history in 20 years, second all-time.
BOSTON – Junior Coston O'Brien posted the best weight throw mark by a Minuteman in 20 years, highlighting UMass' trip to the John Thomas Terrier Classic at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center on Saturday. O'Brien won the event in a field of 43 competitors with a PR of 61 feet, 1.25 inches, which ranks second all-time in UMass history.
O'Brien's toss was just shy of the longest standing UMass record as Dick Ward threw a program-best 61 feet, 9.5 inches in 1963, but surpassed All-American Vic Morency's 60 foot, 9.5-inch throw from 2000.
On the track, senior Hayden Gray claimed fourth in 60 meter dash at 7.13 seconds, while classmate Michael Cuthbert followed in sixth with a time of 7.14 seconds. Cuthbert also placed 10th in 200 meter dash, clocking in at 21.77 seconds.
Senior Myles McDermott rounded out UMass' top performers of the day, taking ninth in long jump at 22 feet, 8.5 inches.
The Minutemen will be back in action next weekend, January 31 and February 1, when the squad will return to Boston for the New England Championships at The Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
