Need to Knows
• Winners in a program-record 10 straight games and 13 of its last 14, University of Massachusetts women's basketball caps a quick two-game homestand Wednesday, welcoming La Salle for an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup. Opening tip at the Mullins Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
• At 3-0 early in Atlantic 10 play, the Minutewomen currently sit in a four-way tie for first place in the league standings, joined by Davidson, Dayton and VCU. UMass' 13 overall wins are currently the most in the A-10.
• A win for the Minutewomen Wednesday would secure the first 11-game winning streak in program history. The current 10-game run enters the matchup tied with South Carolina for the fourth longest active streak in the country, behind UCLA (16), Gonzaga (14) and Stony Brook (14). It would also secure UMass' first 4-0 start to A-10 play since 1996-97.
• Massachusetts was last in action on Sat., Jan. 11, knocking off Saint Joseph's by a 61-43 score. The Minutewomen never trailed in the contest and were led in the scoring column by senior Hailey Leidel (18). Leidel was joined in double figures by classmate Vashnie Perry (15) and sophomore Destiney Philoxy (12). Freshman Maeve Donnelly pulled down seven rebounds and added two blocks.
• All-time the Minutewomen hold a 19-13 advantage in the series with La Salle, taking the last two meetings and four of the last six. Leidel had a double-double in last year's game down in Philadelphia, turning in 16 points and 10 rebounds in the 74-60 win.
• Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the Massachusetts all-time career scoring list in the game at Boston University on Dec. 11. The Brownstown, Mich. native (1,634) needs 45 points to tie former Minutewoman Melissa Gurile Black (1992-96; 1,679) for No. 3 on the list. At the top is Sue Peters (1,858), who reached that mark in a career spanning 1976-80.
• In the St. Bonaventure game on Jan. 8, Leidel eclipsed both the 1,600-point and 600-rebound milestones, becoming one of only three players in program history to accomplish such a feat. She has made at least one three-point field goal in 21 straight games since Feb. 24, 2019, and 38 of her last 39 games dating back to Dec. 7, 2018.
• Perhaps one of the biggest new additions for the Maroon and White this season has been the shot-altering presence of freshman Maeve Donnelly. Donnelly (2.94 blk/gm) is second among Division I freshmen in blocks per game and with 47 total, needs just five to tie the UMass freshman record–Melissa Gurile Black had 52 stops in her rookie season of 1992-93.
• Massachusetts has built a reputation of taking care of the basketball this season–the squad's 13.5 turnovers per game ranks second in the Atlantic 10 and No. 37 across Division I. On three occasions, the Maroon and White have committed 10 or fewer turnovers, highlighted by a season-low five at Vermont on Nov. 29.
