Women’s Soccer Outlasts Siena, 3-2
September 05, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Frisk scores twice for the Minutewomen in the squad’s second straight victory.
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer stretched its unbeaten streak to four, outlasting Siena, 3-2 on Thursday at Siena Field. The victory moves the Minutewomen to 3-1-1 on the season, while the Saints fall to 0-5-0.
"We got off to a quick start with a great group goal," said UMass head coach Jason Dowiak. "We've been working on our movement in the final third, both of the ball and players off the ball, and this goal was one of the best pictures we've created all season of dynamic movement to score! We also continued to show resilience throughout the full 90', dealing with serious pressure from Siena, managing it, and finding the back of the net two more times. I'm happy with the result and the four game unbeaten streak, but eager to see the group play at an even higher level that we know we are capable of."
UMass opened the scoring three minutes into the contest with junior Dani Sclafani sent a through ball to Lauren Bonavita in the box that she fired inside the far left post.
Moments later, Siena tied the score up at 1-1. Carrie Krohn finished off a service from Sophia Dimkopoulos and Deanna Lomino in the 12th minute.
The Minutewomen went back on top, 2-1, before the intermission. Senior Rebeca Frisk finished off a cross from Bonavita at the 24:49 mark.
In the 62nd minute, the Saints answered once more. Katrina Kurtz sent a shot in off the crossbar with Emily McNelis picking up the assist.
Frisk responded with her second of the game, though, in the 78th minute. Driving home a strike from 35 yards out over goalkeeper Taylor Dorado for the game winner.
The teams finished level in shots with 14 apiece, while Siena led in corner kicks, 5-4. Peyton Ryan had six saves in net for the Minutewomen, while Dorado stopped eight for the Saints.
UMass next travels to Harvard on Tuesday, September 10, at 7 p.m.
