Women’s Soccer Sees Streak Snapped With 2-1 Setback At Harvard
September 10, 2019 | Women's Soccer
The Minutewomen will return home to face Tennessee this Sunday in their final match before opening A-10 play.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer played a dominant second half, but was unable to climb back from a 2-0 first half deficit, seeing its four match unbeaten streak snapped with a 2-1 setback at Harvard on Tuesday night. The loss leaves the Minutewomen at 3-2-1, while the Crimson moves to 3-1-0.
"We played what I would say is a pretty excellent and almost perfect to tactics second half, but we have to start games a lot better," said UMass head coach Jason Dowiak.
"I think if we can play a complete game at the level that we've shown here and in a few other games, that we're going to be a tough team to beat."
Harvard took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Murphy Agnew found Hollyn Torres at the top of the six-yard box where Agnew finished the cross along the ground.
Just before the close of the first half, the Crimson extended their advantage to 2-0. Courtney Rabb deposited a feed from Lauren Raimondo into the far left corner of the UMass goal in the 44th minute.
The Minutewomen came out of the intermission pressing hard and, after several near misses, the squad converted on a corner kick in the 79th minute. Freshman Olivia Gouldsbury took the corner and sent the ball into a crowd in the box. Sophomore Lauren Bonavita managed to corral it within the crowd and punch it home.
UMass had a few more opportunities down the stretch, but was unable to come up with the equalizer despite finishing the contest with a 15-5 shot advantage, 4-0 on corners. The Minutewomen put five on target in the second half as Hannah Gardner collected four saves in the frame.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, September 15, when the squad will play host to Tennessee in its final non-conference match ahead of Atlantic 10 play at 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
