Women’s Soccer Completes Thrilling Comeback For 4-3 Win At Saint Joseph’s

September 29, 2019 | Women's Soccer

Kössler registers six points, factoring in all four goals for the Minutewomen.

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts women's soccer scored three goals in just over seven minutes to come from down 3-1 in the second half to pick up a 4-3 victory at Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen improve to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in Atlantic 10 play following the win, while the Hawks fall to 4-6-1, 1-2-0 in conference action.

"Our motto the last couple weeks has been, 'Find A Way' and today we did just that," said UMass head coach Jason Dowiak. "I'm so proud of our team's resilience on the road to come from down in both matches against very good opponents!"

UMass opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Freshman Melissa Kössler and junior Jenny Hipp set up sophomore Lauren Bonavita inside the box for a shot she deposited inside the right post.

Saint Joseph's responded, though, with the next three goals. Dakota Mills converted a penalty in the 35th minute and Melanie Cunha beat goalkeeper Peyton Ryan one-on-one in the 40th minute to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

In the second half Saint Joseph's was awarded another penalty kick, which Kylie D'Ambra used to bring the score to 3-1 in favor of the Hawks at the 56:01 mark.

With under 20 minutes to play in regulation, the Minutewomen went to work, scoring three times in a span of seven minutes, 10 seconds.

Kössler drove a set piece home at 72:51 to bring UMass within one. She then headed a corner from freshman Ansley Frazier to the far post, which junior Fatou Barry tipped in at 79:18 to tie the score at 3-3.

Just 43 seconds later, Kössler netted the would-be game winner off a feed from Frazier.

The Minutewomen out-shot Saint Joseph's, 28-11, and led in corner kicks, 10-2. Fouls were 21-11, against UMass.

The Minutewomen will wrap up their three-match road swing this Thursday, Oct. 3, at George Washington. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
