Massachusetts opens Atlantic 10 Conference play on Saturday at Saint Louis
AMHERST, Mass. ā University of Massachusetts field hockey once again battled to the end with a nationally-ranked foe, but the Minutewomen were edged by No. 10 Harvard, 3-2, on Monday night at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The Maroon and White eliminated a two-goal first quarter deficit to even the score at two-apiece before Harvard netted the game-winning tally in the third stanza.
Ā
Following the win Harvard evens its record at 2-2 on the season, while the Minutewomen drop to 2-4 overall. All four of Massachusetts' losses on the season have come versus top-20 ranked foes, including three by a single goal.
Ā
Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder recorded four saves in the tough setback and Harvard's Ellie Shahbo had three stops for the victory.
Ā
The Crimson made quick work to take a 1-0 lead. In the fifth Minute, Casey Allen sent a cross through the circle and Olivia Hoover was camped near the left post for the deflection, earning her first goal of the season. Mimi Tarrant then doubled the Harvard lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a turnover in the middle third.
Ā
UMass needed little time in the second quarter to move the score to 2-2. In the 24th minute and on the edge of a circle, freshman Vera Heering sent the ball on-cage before a carom landed the ball on the stick of junior Lucy Cooper. Cooper, at the left post, quickly poked the ball home for her second goal of the season.
Ā
Less than five minutes later, a perfectly-executed corner knotted things up at two. Sophomore Katherine Furry fed the insert to redshirt sophomore Jenna Garber at the top, leaving the ball on one touch for junior Georgie McTear. McTear's drag flick took a nice curl back inside the right post and over Shahbo for the equalizer, her third goal of the season.
Ā
Rachel Greenwood netted the unassisted game-winner in the 42nd minute in the aftermath of two quick corner opportunities for the Crimson.
Ā
Harvard had the slim edge in shots on-cage, 7-5, as well as penalty corners (4-2).
Ā
Massachusetts now prepares to begin the Atlantic 10 Conference portion of its schedule, traveling to Saint Louis for a Sat., Sept. 21 match that begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
