Ianni inks first two collegiate goals, van Tonder makes three saves for shutout
MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. ā University of Massachusetts field hockey began its Atlantic 10 schedule on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Saint Louis at SportPort International. The win, UMass' fifth consecutive in an Atlantic 10 opener, moves the squad to 3-4 on the season (1-0 A-10) and SLU is now 0-7 (0-1 A-10).
Ā
Freshman Bella Ianni contributed both goals for the Maroon and White, recording the first tallies of her collegiate career. In the cage, junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder needed three saves over her 60 minutes for van Tonder's first solo shutout as a Minutewoman.
Ā
Ianni scored first in the 10th minute, finishing a feed from junior Georgie McTear. McTear sent a pass from the right side of the circle toward Ianni before Ianni faked SLU goalkeeper Sasha Sander and put the Minutewomen on the board.
Ā
Her second of the day came with under four minutes to play in regulation when classmate Emily Crawford's long pass came into the circle to the stick of Ianni, before Ianni's hard shot skipped into the cage for the insurance marker. The assist for Crawford was her first career point.
Ā
Van Tonder was tested late in the first quarter but stood tall to make two saves, including one in a penalty corner situation. In the second half a lock-down effort by the Minutewomen defense solidified the outcome as SLU was held without a shot or a penalty corner in the final 30 minutes.
Ā
UMass out-shot the Billikens, 5-3, on the day, and earned eight penalty corners to just two for the home side. Sander had three saves for SLU in the loss.
Ā
With just one conference tilt this weekend, Massachusetts now returns home to open a four-game home stand at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The Minutewomen are back on the pitch on Fri., Sept. 27 with a 3 p.m. contest against No. 15 Saint Joseph's.
