No. 20 UAlbany Slips Past Field Hockey, 2-1

September 14, 2019 | Field Hockey

Late penalty corner goal puts visitors past Massachusetts in home opener

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit, but No. 20 nationally ranked UAlbany pulled back in front in the 56th minute and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Minutewomen on Saturday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The loss drops UMass to 2-3 on the season, while the Great Danes are also now 2-3 overall.

Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder recorded her first start in the cage and made four saves in the setback. For UAlbany, Melissa Nealon came up with six stops to preserve the win.

The Great Danes used a penalty corner tally in the ninth minute to get on the board and take an early 1-0 lead. Dana Bozek sent the ball into the circle from straight away and after the feed was broken up, Bozek corralled the ball once again and dribbled left before going to a reverse-stick shot that took an odd carom over van Tonder.

Junior Georgie McTear leveled the score at one-apiece in the 39th minute. Freshman Emily Crawford walked into the circle and sent a centering pass toward classmate Bella Ianni that was broken up by a UAlbany defender. McTear came up with the clear attempt, drove toward the right post and slipped the equalizer between the pads of Nealon for her second goal of the season.

Massachusetts was on the verge of a late lead with less than six minutes to go in the fourth quarter. After Nealon charged out of the cage, junior Lucy Cooper found the ball on her stick with an open cage, but Rachel Schannauer was in position to make the defensive save and keep the score tied at one.

Moments later, UAlbany drew its seventh corner of the day and inserter Kelsey McCrudden looked directly to Cosima Rocktaeschel at the top of the circle for what proved to be the game-winner.

Van Tonder was lifted with 3:35 remaining in regulation for an 11th field player in sophomore Mus Defauwes, but the Great Danes' defense stood tall and kept UMass at bay in search of the late equalizer.

Both sides had nine total shots for the day, although the Maroon and White had the 8-6 edge in on-cage attempts. UAlbany earned six penalty corners to just one for Massachusetts.

Massachusetts welcomes No. 10 Harvard to the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Mon., Sept. 16 for a 5 p.m. tilt.
