Late Cardinals penalty stroke tally the difference; Davies makes five saves in setback
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville's Carter Ayars notched the game's only goal via a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter as the No. 12 nationally ranked Cardinals snuck by University of Massachusetts field hockey, 1-0, on Sunday at Trager Stadium. The Minutewomen fall to 0-2 with the setback, while UofL is now 2-0.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Megan Davies made five saves despite the outcome, before being lifted for an 11th field player with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Louisville's Hollyn Barr recorded two stops.
After a first quarter that saw Davies and the Minutewomen deny two penalty corner opportunities and as many shots, freshman Emily Crawford quickly opened the second stanza with an on-cage attempt. But Barr stood tall and UMass twice more put up solid defensive corner efforts to send the match into halftime scoreless.
Moments before Ayars' penalty stroke tally in the 49th minute, sophomore Mus Defauwes and junior Georgie McTear each had opportunities to put Massachusetts on the board, however none of the three shots would trickle home into the cage.
Ayars' penalty stroke ruling was first sent to video review, before the call stood and she stepped to the penalty spot for what became the game-winner. With 5:02 left on the clock, senior Sara Davis entered the contest as an 11th field player in place of Davies, but the Minutewomen could not overcome defensive pressure by Louisville as the match went final.
Massachusetts now returns to New England and turns its attention to a 6 p.m. contest at Yale on Fri., Sept. 6 at Johnson Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
