Women’s Soccer Plays To 2-2 Draw At UMass Lowell

Bonavita and Gouldsbury both collect their first goals of the season against the River Hawks.
LOWELL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer earned a 2-2 draw at UMass Lowell on Thursday night at Cushing Field. The Minutewomen wrap up their three-match road swing to start off the 2019 campaign at 1-1-1, while the River Hawks sit at 0-2-1 on the year.
UMass Lowell opened the scoring just 4:27 into the contest when Veronica Morrier drove towards goal and put home her attempt inside the far post to give the River Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
In the 31st minute, UMass leveled the score at 1-1 as Lauren Bonavita finished off a feed from Jenny Hipp for her first of the season.
The Minutewomen then took the lead, 2-1, before the intermission. Off a Rebeca Frisk corner kick, Olivia Gouldsbury corralled a loose ball in the box and put home her first collegiate tally at 40:13.
With time winding down in the second half, though, the River Hawks pulled level with UMass once more. Emily Nelson finished off a centering cross from Kara Fleet at the doorstep to bring the score 2-2 in the 76th minute.
The Mintuewomen had several chances to net the would-be game winner in the remainder of the contest, but Melissa Kössler's tallies were called back for offsides and Sini Laaksonen run a strike off the crossbar in the 105th minute.
UMass out-shot UMass Lowell, 19-16 and led in corner kicks, 8-3. Fouls were 13-9, against the Minutewomen. Goalkeeper Peyton Ryan had six saves on the evening, while her counterparts Farrell O'Shaughnessy and Lauren Huff totaled two and three stops, respectively.
UMass will be back in action this Sunday, September 1, playing host to Pitt for the squad's 2019 home opener at 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
