Lasko selected to All-Academic Team; Shapiro voted All-Rookie
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball senior right-handed pitcher Justin Lasko as well as redshirt freshman outfielder Collin Shapiro have been honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference with postseason awards, announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office. Lasko was tabbed to the A-10 All-Academic Team and Shapiro was named a member of the All-Rookie Team.
Lasko, a sport management major from Stratford, Connecticut, led the league in innings pitched (88.1), complete games (4) and shutouts (2) plus ranked tied for fifth with 82 strikeouts. Lasko had seven quality starts in the regular season, including the only recorded Maddux in the Atlantic 10–a 96-pitch, four-hit shutout of George Washington on April 12. Lasko finished his career in possession of the UMass program records in career starts (48), innings pitched (311.1) and strikeouts (247). He rounded out his time in the classroom with a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average and was previously honored by UMass Athletics with the Spring 2019 Scholar-Athlete Award. Lasko also picked up A-10 Pitcher of the Week laurels on March 4.
Shapiro hit .301 on the season with 11 extra-base hits and 22 RBI, missing only two games and making 42 starts. He immediately burst onto the scene, becoming the first UMass player since at least 1996 to begin their collegiate career reaching base safely in 26 straight games. The April 8 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week ranked fourth in the league in walks (35) and sixth in on-base percentage (.450), the latter of which stood nearly 150 points higher than his batting average. In conference play, Shapiro narrowly missed the top-10 with a .350 batting average. He hit .409 in the month of April, when UMass answered a difficult March with an 11-6 stretch, including Beanpot victories over Boston College and Harvard, plus series wins over Saint Louis, George Washington, La Salle and Maine. Shapiro is from Exeter, New Hampshire.
