Massachusetts puts tying run on base in ninth, but unable to finish rally effort
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to answer a pair of Saint Joseph's runs as the Minutemen fell, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Senior Justin Lasko went eight innings in his final regular season start, striking out five, walking two and scattering seven hits on the day.
Lasko's (3-7) program-record 48th start saw the right hander increase his innings total to 311.1 as well as his strikeout count to 247, both atop the UMass record book.
St. Joe's initially struck with a leadoff home run in the second inning by Nate Thomas, adding an insurance run in the seventh when Liam Bendo's sac fly plated Dominic Cuoci to increase the visitors' lead to 2-0.
UMass threatened in its final at bat and even brought the winning run to the plate. A one-out double off the bat of redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro put Shapiro in scoring position before junior Eddy Hart drew a walk. Hart was retired on a fielder's choice that put runners at the corners, but SJU closer Cole Stetzar ended the opportunity with a strikeout to bring the ballgame to an end.
For St. Joe's Jordan DiValerio (5-5) was the winner with eight innings of shutout ball in the start, holding the Minutemen to three hits plus a walk, fanning four along the way. Stetzar worked the ninth for his third save of the season.
The Minutemen continue their series with St. Joe's with the middle contest on Fri., May 17 at 1 p.m.
