Massachusetts recognizes nine-man senior class in finale at Earl Lorden Field

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to bounce back from a pair of late inning surges as the Minutemen were defeated by Saint Joseph's, 8-4 and 8-5, in a doubleheader on Saturday at Earl Lorden Field. The pair of contests marked the end of the regular season for the Minutemen.

Prior to the doubleheader, UMass celebrated its nine-member Class of 2019, which includes seniors Casey Aubin, Connor Donahue, Logan Greene, Matt Hosman, Justin Lasko, Ryan Lever, Cooper Mrowka and Alec Norton along with redshirt junior Thomas Pipolo.

Game 1
Saint Joseph's 8, Massachusetts 4
Eight Minutemen combined for nine hits, including Norton's 2-for-4 contest with two runs scored, but SJU posted three-spots in the fifth and sixth innings to pull ahead for the remainder of the contest.

UMass took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on the strength of a two-run single by sophomore Luke Oliphant through the left side. Scoring on the play were Lever and Norton, who reached on a fielder's choice and single, respectively.

The Hawks would answer and take a 6-2 lead after the sixth inning, adding a two-run home run in the eighth by Domininc Cuoci.

Massachusetts battled in the ninth for an attempt at a rally but was unable to get closer than 8-4. Norton led off the inning with a single into left before Pipolo dropped a base hit into right center, moving Norton into scoring position. Hosman then came up as a pinch hitter and sent the first pitch he saw down the third base line to plate Norton and place Pipolo on second base. Pipolo would score on an RBI single from junior Nolan Kessinger in the final moments of the balllgame.

St. Joe's starter Ryan Devine (3-2) went seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits plus three walks. He struck out five. The loss went to UMass' Sean Harney (3-5), who was relieved after a 4.1-inning start in which Harney was responsible for three runs.

Game 2
Saint Joseph's 8, Massachusetts 5
Aubin received the starting nod for the first time this season and went 3.2 innings after seeing action out of the bullpen on Thursday afternoon. He allowed a single run on four hits, striking out five and exiting to an ovation from the UMass faithful. The four-hit total included just the second by a left-handed hitter against Aubin this season (2-for-34).

Pipolo lifted the Minutemen to an early 1-0 lead, poking a ground ball through the right side that scored Lever in the second inning.

The next six innings saw the lead change hands three times. Cuoci clubbed a solo shot in the fourth as the Hawks took a 2-1 advantage, which the Minutemen eliminated in the bottom half when Lever came home on a wild pitch.

In the fifth UMass went back in front, 4-2, when Greene sent a grounder to the left side that slipped through on a two-out error. Hosman was already on third base and scored, while Oliphant sprinted home from second with the insurance run.

That score remained until the eighth, when SJU sent nine men to bat and came away with a four-spot on the scoreboard. Norton helped the Minutemen claw back within one at 6-5, lacing an RBI single into left field to plate junior Eddy Hart after Hart led off with a standup double to deep right center.

St. Joe's extended its lead to three in the ninth on a hit batsman and walk, both with the bases loaded.

Cole Stetzar (3-2) dealt the final four innings for the Hawks en route to the win, while the loss went to freshman Jack Steele (3-4).
