Hart and Videtto contribute two hits apiece; Aubin moves into top five all-time in career saves
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball returned to the win column, battling back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Fairfield, 6-3, on Tuesday at Earl Lorden Field. It marked the final non-conference matchup of the regular season for the Minutemen, who host Saint Joseph's in a crucial Atlantic 10 series at Earl Lorden Field beginning on Thurs., May 16 at 3 p.m.
Sophomore Zach Clevenger (2-2) picked up the win in relief, tossing a scoreless fifth inning. Casey Aubin closed out the ninth inning, recording his fifth save of the season and ninth of his career, moving the senior into a tie for fifth in program history alongside former Minuteman Bryan Adamski (2005-07).
At the plate five different UMass batters combined for seven hits, with junior Eddy Hart and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto tallying two singles and an RBI each.
The Stags struck first in the opening inning of the contest, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Anthony Boselli. A base hit by Tim Zeng and groundout by Justin Guerrera in the second inning later pushed the score to 3-0 in favor of the visitors.
Unfazed by the early Fairfield surge, Massachusetts clawed back within one with a two-run bottom of the third. With two outs, Hart ripped a line drive off the glove of Guerrera at second base and into right field, scoring senior Alec Norton, before Videtto blooped a payoff pitch into shallow left center to plate redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro. The Minutemen were not finished and equalized in the fourth when Shapiro beat out a double play ball, keeping the inning alive and crossing senior Logan Greene with the tying run.
In the fifth, UMass claimed the lead for good with a three-run frame, beginning with a pair of one-out singles by Videtto and junior Nolan Kessinger. Then, with the Stags attempting to turn a double play, Kessinger slid in safely at second base after an errant throw pulled Guerrera off the bag and got away, not only allowing Videtto to score but moving Kessinger and senior Logan Greene up another 90 feet. Kessinger would later score on a wild pitch and Greene via a safety squeeze laid down by classmate Ryan Lever.
From that point forward, a strong effort from the Maroon and White bullpen and defense carried the way. Freshman Kevin Dow relieved Clevenger to start the sixth and faced one over the minimum in his two innings, setting the stage for redshirt sophomore Spencer Bergeron and Aubin to work an inning each and secure the victory. Dow had a quick 1-2-3 seventh inning with some help from his defense, which turned double plays in three of the final four frames including to end the ballgame.
Fairfield's Nick Grabek (2-2) took the loss, responsible for four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks over 1.1 innings.
