Minutemen close out three-game series Sunday at noon from Bill Beck Field
KINGSTON, R.I. – University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to battle back from an early eight-run deficit as the Minutemen fell, 8-3, to Rhode Island on Saturday at Bill Beck Field.
Junior Eddy Hart had three hits, including an RBI double, recording his 12th multi-hit game this season and second in as many days. Fellow junior Nolan Kessinger recorded his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Rhody opened the day's scoring with a three-spot in the second inning. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases to begin the frame, then Greg Cavaliere grounded into a fielder's choice that scored a run before Austin White smacked a two-run single into center field. The Rams would add four more in the third on a bases-loaded walk plus a three-run double off the bat of Brett McManus, extending the lead to 7-0.
Massachusetts had a chance to get on the board in the top of the fifth, when redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto laced a standup double. But the Minutemen were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and left runners at the corners.
UMass finally cut into the deficit with a three-run sixth. Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro laced a one-out triple ahead of a ground rule double by Hart, which scored Shapiro. Kessinger then clubbed a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right for his second home run of the year and moved the score to 8-3.
URI's Tyler Wilson was the winner on the mound (1-0) with 5.1 innings of three-run ball, giving up six hits and striking out three. Freshman Jack Steele took the loss (3-3) for the Minutemen. Steele worked two-plus innings in the start before the UMass bullpen covered the balance of the contest and held the Rams to just one earned run.
The three-game series wraps up on Sun., May 12 with a noon tilt.
