Recap in a Minute
UMass completed its first three-game series last weekend, taking one game apiece from Central Connecticut and Navy in Annapolis, Maryland. In the first game of a doubleheader on Sat., March 2, UMass defeated Central Connecticut in a 1-0, 11-inning pitcher's duel. Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro was hit by a pitch and eventually came around with the winning run. In the nightcap, senior Justin Lasko threw a complete game shutout, allowing Navy just five hits. A three-run eighth inning for the Minutemen broke a scoreless tie and a perfect ninth from Lasko sealed the victory.
Sunday's finale with the host Midshipmen was called after 5-1/2 innings due to weather, with Navy claiming a 12-4 victory.
Lasko Tabbed Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week
For his efforts at Navy on Sat., March 2, Lasko was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander scattered five hits and struck out eight Midshipmen, three short of a career-high and lowering his ERA to 0.61. His outing capped a terrific doubleheader on the part of the UMass pitching staff, as Minuteman arms worked a total of 20 innings without surrendering a run.
Your Destination is in 90 Feet
The trio of sophomore senior Ryan Lever, sophomore Luke Oliphant and redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro each have reached base safely in all four games on the young season. That includes a career-best four-game hitting streak for Oliphant in addition to a three-game stretch in which junior Eddy Hart has reached base.
Scouting UTRGV
The Vaqueros are coming off a close close 4-3 loss Tues., March 5 to in-state rival and national power Texas. UTRGV currently sits at 9-4 on the 2019 campaign, including a sweep of Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island in Edinburg.
Nice to Meet You
This weekend's series marks the first all-time meeting between UMass and UT Rio Grande Valley. All-time, UMass has squared off against three Texas programs, including Texas A&M (1995), Rice (1996) and Sam Houston State (2011).
Remembering Dick Bergquist
Legendary former UMass baseball head coach Dick Bergquist passed away on Feb. 24 at the age of 86. Bergquist, at the helm of the program from 1967-87, led his ball clubs to 392 victories, seven Yankee Conference championships, two New England championships, one Atlantic 10 Conference championship and a fifth-place finish at the 1969 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
Josh Walfish of the Daily Hampshire Gazette as well as Matt Vautour of MassLive chronicled the life and countless achievements of Bergquist in recent stories, which can be read here (Walfish) and here (Vautour).
