Three Earn UMass Student-Athlete Of The Week Honors

Powers of baseball, and Acquah and Catherwood of men’s track and field will be honored on Wednesday.

AMHERST, Mass. – Callen Powers of baseball, and Matthew Acquah and Collin Catherwood of men's track and field earned UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by UMassFive College Credit Union. The trio will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this week.

The luncheon takes place on Wednesday, April 8, at noon in the Berkshire Room of the Berkshire Dining Commons. Cost to attend is $17 (15.30 for UMass Alumni).

Powers started on the mound for the Minutemen in Friday's 4-0 shutout win over Northern Illinois, tossing seven complete innings to receive the winning decision. The junior allowed no runs, two hits, walked four and struck out a career-best 10 batters faced.

Acquah took the top spot in the men's triple jump at the UConn Dog Fight meet on Saturday with a jump of 49'6.5". Acquah's jump ranks best in the MAC and fifth in the Northeast region of Division I, as well as 77th in the country. The Natick native has placed first in both meets he has appeared in to start the outdoor season, including a three-foot improvement over the week. 

At the UConn Dog Fight meet on Saturday, Catherwood paced the men's 1500m run with a finishing time of 3:45.40. Catherwood's time ranks second best in the conference and is eighth-best in the Northeast region in Division I. With his time, the Central Valley, N.Y. native broke the men's outdoor program record.
