Baseball Topped By UTRGV in Series Opener, 12-6

March 09, 2019 | Baseball

Minutemen battle back to tie the contest in eighth, but Vaqueros counter with six-run bottom half

EDINBURG, Texas – University of Massachusetts baseball was defeated by UT Rio Grande Valley, 12-6, on Friday night in the teams' series opener at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. With the setback, the Minutemen drop to 3-2 while the Vaqueros improve to 10-4 on the year.

Sophomore Luke Oliphant was 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with a bases-clearing double for three RBIs, also contributing two runs scored. Senior Logan Greene was also 3-for-5 with a double, finishing the night knocking in one. Junior Eddy Hart and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto each had 2-for-5 clips.

The Vaqueros struck first with one in the bottom of the first, but Massachusetts immediately answered by way of Oliphant in the top of the second. Aided in part by a fielding error, Oliphant swung away on the first pitch and sent a double to the gap in left center field, clearing the bases and giving the Minutemen a 3-1 lead. Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro then added some insurance with a base hit up the middle to bring Oliphant home.

UTRGV would counter with two in their half of the second before adding three more in the third to take a 6-4 lead. That score remained until the top of the eighth when Videtto's RBI single to left plated Oliphant and a base knock by Greene through the right side scored junior Eddy Hart, tying the score at six-all. But the Vaqueros sent 10 men to bat in their half, producing six runs and sealing the victory.

On the mound, freshman Kevin Dow (0-1) received the loss, appearing out of the bullpen for 2.1 innings of work. For UTRGV, Ryan Jackson claimed the win (1-2) after dealing the final two innings on the night and striking out two.

The Minutemen continue their series with UTRGV on Sat., March 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
