Minutemen Fall to VCU in Pitchers’ Duel, 3-1
March 24, 2019 | Baseball
Massachusetts battled into the ninth and had the tying run at second base
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball put up a valiant effort in the series finale, but VCU broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run eighth inning as the Rams topped UMass, 3-1 on Sunday at The Diamond.
UMass finished the day with seven hits from six different spots in the lineup, led by a 2-for-4 outing from redshirt sophomore Connor Smith. Senior Logan Greene was 1-for-3 out of the three-hole with a sacrifice fly, recording his 10th RBI of the season. Several individual reached base streaks were extended by various Minutemen, including redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro (16), senior Ryan Lever (15) and junior Eddy Hart (15).
Greene's sac fly in the third inning capped a frame in which sophomore Luke Oliphant worked a leadoff walk before stealing second and moving up another 90 feet on a groundout from Shapiro. But VCU evened the score at one-apiece in the last of the third when Hogan Brown skied a sac fly of his own to bring home Anthony Taylor.
UMass threatened in the sixth with a pair of two-out walks, but the Rams brought on Jack Alkire out of the bullpen only for Alkire to quickly work a strikeout and end the threat.
Steven Carpenter's two-run single in the eighth for VCU, in part set up by two stolen bases, gave the Rams a 3-1 lead which they would not relinquish.
UMass gave itself a chance in its final turn at bat, putting runners in scoring position. Lever opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by Smith. Oliphant's ground out back to the mound moved Smith and pinch runner Luke Gutos to third and second, respectively, but a strikeout ended the opportunity and secured the victory for the home side.
Alkire (3-1) was the winning pitcher out of the bullpen, picking up the final 3.1 innings of work. Freshman Jack Pawloski (0-1) took the loss in relief of sophomore Sean Harney, whose start lasted 6.1 innings in which Harney allowed a single run on just two hits, walking five and striking out two.
Massachusetts is scheduled to open the home slate on Tues., March 26, welcoming UAlbany to Earl Lorden Field at 3 p.m.
