Spring break trip concludes with Sunday matchup at noon
KENNESAW, Ga. – University of Massachusetts baseball was defeated by Kennesaw State, 12-2, at Stillwell Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Senior Ryan Lever was 2-for-3 on the day, scoring once and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto finished 3-for-4.
Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro walked and extended his reached base streak to all 11 contests this season, matching the longest UMass streak since 2006 for a player in their first competitive year with the Minutemen. Elsewhere, junior Eddy Hart as well as Lever improved their respective streaks in the same category to 10 straight games.
Kennesaw State first found the scoreboard with a five-run second inning but the Minutemen immediately responded with two in the top of the third. Sophomore Luke Oliphant laced a right-field double to score Lever from second base and get UMass on the board, before Shapiro's groundout brought in redshirt freshman Kane Medina.
The Owls would get those runs back with three in the bottom half of the third, tacking on three more in the fifth and one final tally in the sixth inning.
KSU's Ryan Kennedy (3-1) earned the win and the loss went to freshman Brad Collins (1-2). Sophomore Zach Clevenger and freshman Michael Rounds worked the final 2.2 innings of the day allowing one hit apiece and with each recording a strikeout.
Following the loss, UMass is 4-7 overall this season and Kennesaw State is now 10-9.
UMass concludes the series and its spring break trip with a Sun., March 17 game with the Owls. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Stillwell Stadium.
