Minutemen Drop Series Opener at Kennesaw State, 9-0
March 15, 2019 | Baseball
Massachusetts continues three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
KENNESAW, Ga. – University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to bounce back from a four-run first inning for Kennesaw State as the Owls claimed a 9-0 win over the Minutemen in the teams' series opener on Friday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium. UMass falls to 4-6 following the result and KSU is now an even 9-9.
Redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro had a 2-for-4 day out of the two-hole, extending his reached base streak to 10 consecutive games–the longest since 2006 by a UMass player in their first year of competition with the Minutemen. Senior Logan Greene followed Shapiro with an identical 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Junior Eddy Hart singled and senior Ryan Lever worked a walk, giving both their ninth consecutive contest reaching base safely.
KSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, beginning with a two-run double by Tyler Simon and immediately followed by Darius Diaz's two-RBI single down the right field line. The margin moved to 6-0 in the last of the fourth when Terence Norman laced a base hit up the middle that plated two.
The Owls wrapped up the day's scoring with three more in their half of the sixth inning as Norman popped a single into right field ahead of a two-run knock off the bat of Kooper Briley.
The win for the Owls went to Brooks Buckler (1-1) and the loss was given to senior Justin Lasko (1-1).
The Minutemen continue their three-game series with the Owls on Sat., March 16 at 2 p.m. at Stillwell Stadium.
